SILVES
Silves is located high on a hill overlooking the mountain range of Monchique, by the river Arade, which is responsible both for the City’s most outstanding moments of glory as well as for it’s downfalls.
Silves knows human life since the most remote times and probably had it´s origins in a Phoenician site located approximately 2 kilometres away from the city. It also reflects the influence of the Roman period and was described by geographers of the 12th century as grand and magnificent, compared in greatness to cities like Lisbon, Seville and Cordoba.
It was during the Arab occupation that the city became an important economical, social and cultural centre and was described as the ‘place of birth of Arabe and Andalusian poetry’. The city’s monuments are from this period, namely the magnificent and well preserved castle and the ‘Almóada’ Cistern/Well, which is unique in the world.
