PORTIMÃO
Portimão grew up from the confluence and harmony between the river and the sea. Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs went up the river Arade and left their marks in the area. The modern and commercial city of Portimão was built during the Discoveries period in the 15th centuary.
During the 19th centuary it became an important fishing centre and tinned fish industry, which gradually lost its importance due to a strong external competition. Nowadays, tourism, commerce and services are the basis of its economy. The closeness with the sea and the river can be noticed in its gastronomy, where Grilled Sardines, and Clams play an outstanding rle. Not far, between the estuary and the sea, you will find Alvor, a land of sea and fishing traditions and deep religious beliefs.
